| DUE TO RECORD BREAKING WARM TEMPERATURES IN MARCH AND APRIL. FOLLOWING WHAT HAD BEEN A MILD WINTER.. TREES AT BLUE JAY ORCHARDS BEGAN BUDDING IN LATE MARCH, THEN BLOOMING IN EARLY APRIL, ABOUT 3-4WEEKS BEFORE NORMAL.
IN LATE APRIL AS MOST OF THE ORCHARD WAS IN FULL BLOOM, OUR MOST CRITICAL TIME, TEMPERATURES AT BLUE JAY ORCHARDS FELL BELOW 23 DEGREES INJURING THE BLOSSOMS. THIS IS ONLY THE SECOND TIME IN 27 YEARS THAT BLUE JAY HAS HAD A SUGNIFICANT CROP LOSS.
BLUE JAY ORCHARDS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO OFFER PICK YOUR OWN APPLES FROM OUR ORCHARD THIS SEASON .THE TREES PRODUCED A VERY SMALL AMOUNT OF FRUIT .
WE ARE FORTUNATE TO HAVE GROWER FRIENDS THAT DID NOT LOOSE THIER CROPS HELPING PROVIDE US WITH MANY OF THE VARIETIES THAT WE GROW AT BLUE JAY. BLUE JAY WILL CONTINUE OUR MARKET SALES AS NORMAL
OUR ORCHARD HAYRIDES, AND PICK YOUR OWNPUMPKINS WILL CONTINUE AND WE ARE PLANNING SOME FUN ACTIVITIES THOUGHOUT THE FALL INCLUDING, BAGPIPERS, MA-N-PA BLUEGRASS SINGERS, AND CATHY WALKO, A LOCAL BEEKEEPER, GIVING INFORMATION ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF HONEYBEES.
